This type of investment means that you accept to take a certain amount of risk in order to achieve a potentially higher return.

Why does investing involve risk? Because financial markets simply do not move in a straight line. They alternate between upswings and downswings, depending on multiple factors (economic, social, environmental and political in particular). However, over the long term, over a period of 10, 20 and even 50 years, financial markets show a clear upward trend.

An investment must be seen as something that aims to achieve a return over the (more or less) long term. That's why some parents and grandparents choose to start investing for their children and grandchildren while these are still very young, because the investment can grow for 10, 15 or even more years. In principle, this is more than enough time to compensate for occasional stock market dips.

You need to be aware of some fundamental principles when investing for your child:

you invest only the money you don't need in the short term, so you can let the money grow without touching it;

you diversify your investments, so as to limit the risks if one market performs less well.

A few investment specifics:

potentially higher yields;

ideally a long-term investment;

greater flexibility when you invest (you choose the amounts and frequency) ;

NO capital guarantee (hence the importance of diversifying and knowing what you are investing in beforehand).

"}},{"componentType":"highlight","richBody":{"value":"
Watch the videos made by our experts:

Two fundamental concepts for smart investing

Five mistakes for new investors to avoid

"},"title":"Want to know more about the basic principles of investing before you begin?"},{"componentType":"paragraph","richBody":{"value":"
ING offers you the solution that suits you best.
"},"textLinks":[{"text":"Discover our savings solutions","url":"/en/individuals/saving/standing-order"},{"text":"Discover our ready-made investment solution","url":"/en/individuals/investing/easy-invest"}]}]},"hasMacro":false,"id":"ac566b79-28a0-4da4-99b1-f672cf29f1ef","localeString":"en-GB","mainHeaderZone":{"backLink":{"textLink":{"text":"Investment academy","url":"/en/individuals/managing-my-assets/investment-academy"}},"componentType":"editorialHeader","coreHeader":{"body":"Building up a capital for your child is always a good idea.
