Morningstar looks not only at numbers but also at the quality behind the fund. They use three key pillars:

Based on these three factors, together with historical performance (adjusted for risk and costs), Morningstar calculates a score. This score shows to what extent a fund is expected to outperform the average competitor within the same category.
