The average cost is often stated in €/Wp. In other words, in euros per watt-peak, the maximum amount that a solar panel can produce under optimum conditions. In 2024, we're talking about €1.3 / Wp to €2.5 / Wp with the installation included.
Based on an average of 3,500 kWh per year for a standard family and on the fact that a solar panel is never in optimal condition 100% of the time, we talk about a correction coefficient. Therefore, we would need a capacity of 4,100 Wp for this standard family.
Assuming an average price of €2/Wp, this gives an annual budget of around €8,200. Bear in mind that this is, of course, a very rough calculation and that each situation is different (terraced house, underfloor heating, insulation, desire to install batteries, etc.).
Be that as it may, although the total cost of a photovoltaic installation has fallen in recent years, it still represents a substantial budget that many Belgians prefer to spread out over time through a loan. The several ways to do this are described below.
"}},{"componentType":"sectionTitle","title":"What funding support is available for solar panels in 2024?"},{"componentType":"paragraph","richBody":{"value":"
Depending on the region you live in, there are different regulations that can facilitate the installation of your panels. We're not talking here about grants and benefits that no longer exist in Wallonia or Flanders (but still exist in Brussels in the form of municipal grants or green certificates), but about zero-interest financing solutions.

In Wallonia, there is a 0% interest rate available with the Rénoprêt, but this is subject to a means test and the age of the house (at least 15 years old). What's more, this option comes with a maximum loan limit of €60,000 which includes other work (so, for example, if you want to buy a house to renovate and are planning to carry out €100,000 of work, including your solar panels, the zero-rate can only cover part of the work if you meet the required conditions).

In Flanders, there is the MijnVerbouwLening scheme, which offers the same kind of possibilities with the same type of conditions and amount (age of the building, means test, etc.). However, since February 2024, this loan is now subject to an interest rate of 2.75% and this rate will be increased to the level of the legal interest rate of 5.75% in the spring of 2025. However, it is important to check the conditions in detail on the websites of the various regions.

In Brussels, there is the Ecoreno loan (which can be either a consumer loan or a mortgage), which is also available subject to conditions. Depending on your income, you may or may not be eligible for the loan but if you are the rate applied will also depend on your income (1.5% or 2.5%).
"}},{"componentType":"sectionTitle","title":"What loan for solar panels?"},{"componentType":"paragraph","richBody":{"value":"
There are a number of solutions on offer from the regions. However, depending on your project, they can be quite restrictive. For example, if your house is less than 15 years old and you want to install solar panels to keep up with rising energy prices, this will not be possible in Wallonia or Flanders. Similarly, if your income is too high, you won't be able to use these options either. However, if you are embarking on a large-scale renovation of an old home, for example, you might quickly reach the loan ceiling and need other financing solutions.

The article Energy retrofit, save energy! explains in more detail the return you can expect from your solar panels.

Fortunately, there are other interesting options offered by the various lending institutions in Belgium. The energy loan, which is an instalment loan to finance work to improve the energy efficiency of your home, enables you to pay less interest than a conventional renovation loan as long as 75% of the work is for an energy retrofit (this includes solar panels).

If you're interested in taking out such a loan, don't hesitate to use our energy loan simulation tool to get an idea of the possibilities available.
"}},{"componentType":"sectionTitle","title":"Also consider!"},{"cards":[{"cardSize":"small","cardType":"product","componentType":"productCard","image":{"extension":"jpg","original":"https://assets.ing.com/m/6cae176aa2d05bb0/original/A-smiling-young-woman-stands-on-a-ladder-beneath-the-doorframe-holding-out-blue-cables-to-the-camera.jpg","transformBaseUrl":"https://assets.ing.com/transform/a8e158f4-4dcd-48b3-8e6d-964f0c4c0f66/A-smiling-young-woman-stands-on-a-ladder-beneath-the-doorframe-holding-out-blue-cables-to-the-camera","type":"image","width":8268},"intro":"Reduced-rate installment loan when at least 75% of your renovation are aimed at saving energy.","link":{"url":"/en/individuals/borrowing/energy-loan-renovation"},"title":"Energy loan for renovations"},{"cardSize":"small","cardType":"product","componentType":"productCard","image":{"altTextFR":"Couple peignant et rénovant leur maison ensemble","extension":"jpg","original":"https://assets.ing.com/m/7cf7d65750c1806e/original/Couple-painting-and-renovating-their-house-together.jpg","transformBaseUrl":"https://assets.ing.com/transform/46197e57-7fc2-4813-98c3-73f46b0f9c72/Couple-painting-and-renovating-their-house-together","type":"image","width":4096},"intro":"Have you just bought a property to renovate and can’t get your head around home improvement loans or grants?
