The Banque Bruxelles Lambert was the result of a former merger. Banque de Bruxelles and Banque Lambert were indeed merged on 30 June 1975 to form Banque Bruxelles Lambert (BBL). The holding companies of these two institutions had been merged in 1972. Founded in 1871, Banque de Bruxelles grew steadily over the ensuing six decades, acquiring interests in other banks in Belgium's major cities.

The creation of Banque Lambert, which together with Banque de Bruxelles will later become Banque Bruxelles Lambert, is closely linked to the birth of Belgium.
Under the leadership of Baron Léon Lambert, the bank becomes the second most important private financial institution in Belgium, with its headquarters in the emblematic Marnix building.

In 1975, Banque de Bruxelles and Banque Lambert decide to merge. Banque Bruxelles Lambert, BBL, is born.
The 1980s and 1990s are characterised by spectacular progress in the field of computer science, and BBL resolutely takes the lead.

In search of a second home market, ING Group acquires BBL. The bank's entry to ING Group brings with it many opportunities. Eye-catching campaigns surrounding the name change in 2002 and 2003 put ING firmly on the map as a brand in Belgium.
The period is also characterised by the creation of Record Bank and ING in Belgium’s acquisition of Mercator Bank.
