“The construction sector faces two major challenges: we want to reduce our carbon footprint and at the same time find a solution for the availability of raw materials. Innovation is crucial to achieving these goals,” says Pieter De Brabandere. ‘For example, we have developed a circular concrete, for which we use recovered raw materials. We have built a large installation to valorise concrete rubble from demolition works into concrete sand and concrete granulates.’
Quality is paramount for the construction sector. Tests have shown that De Brabandere's Eco-Concrete is equivalent to conventional concrete. ‘For a project on our own site, we produced concrete in which 30% of the sand has been replaced by recycled concrete sand. Analyses at the Circular Concrete Centre in Veurne have shown that this innovative product passes all the tests and is therefore ready for use in the wider market.’
